Mahesh Babu vs Prithviraj: SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi writer confirms 30 mins ‘Rama vs Kumbhakarna’ sequence

Following the global phenomenon of RRR, S.S. Rajamouli is currently working on his next mammoth, globe-trotting adventure titled Varanasi. Varanasi to feature a 30-Minute clash between Rama and Kumbhkarna
Giving a massive update about S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming spectacle Varanasi, Vijayendra Prasad stated that the film will feature a half-hour fight sequence between Rama and Kumbhkarna from The Ramayana.
“It’s a war between Rama and Kumbhakarna,” he said. The ace writer added, “You saw in the trailer, right? You saw Rama and Kumbhakarna. You saw Lord Hanuman’s tail and a chariot on it. I’m talking about that…spellbound.”
According to insiders, this 30-minute high-octane battle will be one of the major highlights of the film. It is already known that in Varanasi, Mahesh Babu plays a dual role, embodying the modern adventurer Rudhra as well as Lord Rama himself.
Facing off against him as the primary antagonist is none other than Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran, who portrays Kumbha (Kumbhkarna).
Prithviraj opened up about how incredibly challenging his role has been, especially given Rajamouli’s unique creative vision. Speaking to Collider, the actor revealed that the performance had to rely entirely on his facial expressions.
“You are put in a situation where nothing from the neck down is visible, and you realize that whatever you do physically will not be seen. Everything you have at your disposal is concentrated on your face. What you need to convey must come through your face and eyes. It is definitely one of the most complex characters Rajamouli sir has conceived,” he explained.
Varanasi has already made headlines for being shot globally, making history as the first Indian feature film to shoot extensively in Antarctica. With a stellar cast including Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prakash Raj, the film is expected to be an absolute cinematic bomb when it hits theatres in 2027.
