After the sacking of filmmaker Sanjeev Pillai from Mamangam, the makers of the film in an interview with Indian Express stated that the director's works were not retained in the film. The filmmaker was ousted after he finished filming half of the film after an unfortunate fallout with producer Venu Kunnappilly. Malayalam superstar Mammootty plays the lead role and the movie went on the floors last year post a lot of hype. Sanjeev was also ousted from the screenplay of the film.

For the unversed, after the first shooting schedule was completed, the deal that Sanjeev and Venu had did not go as per the plan. It was said that Venu expressed his disappointment with the pace that Sanjeev was shooting the film. While M Padmakumar of Joseph fame was roped in as the film’s new director, actor-director Shankar Ramakrishnan penned the screenplay by adapting Sanjeev’s story. The whole film was then shot from the beginning.

Talking to Indian Express, Executive Producer of Mamangam, Vivek Ramadevan stated that it was not a pleasant thing to fire someone from the film, that too after half of the work was already done. He added that it was done in the interest of the film. “We were left with no option but to take that step. Sanjeev went to courts, and courts upheld that whatever we did was right, including Kerala High Court. So, that’s been an unpleasant experience,” he was quoted as saying.

Coming back to the movie, Mamangam is a periodic drama set in the 17th century and it narrates the story of ‘Chavers’ (suicide warriors) of feudal Kerala and their attempts to get over of the Zamorin ruler. The movie is all set to hit the big screens on December 12, 2019.
