Mohanlal opens up on COVID-era OTT films turning into theatrical flops: ‘We made films so people could survive’

Mohanlal was recently seen playing the lead role in the crime drama thriller Drishyam 3. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the movie is currently running in theaters. However, in a recent interview, the actor reflected on the decision to release Drishyam 2 directly on OTT and explained why some of his films that were initially meant for digital release later turned out to be flops in theaters.
Mohanlal reflects on how certain films meant for OTT screens became flops in theaters
Speaking with Reporter TV, Mohanlal said, “One of the films that helped Malayalam cinema itself gain recognition outside Kerala was Drishyam 2, not just the Drishyam franchise. People from places as far as Bihar have come up to me and asked when Drishyam 3 is coming out. All of them had watched Drishyam in Malayalam itself. They prefer watching the original film with subtitles.”
“Releasing Drishyam 2 directly on OTT was not a deliberate decision. During the COVID period, we could have chosen not to make films at all. But then, many people who worked with us would struggle without jobs, many with families. We did not want that to happen. That is why we made films for OTT platforms. During the COVID period, I acted in around seven films, probably the highest by any actor at the time. Some films that were made for OTT later got theatrical releases, but many of them did not perform well,” the actor added.

Drishyam 3 is set after the events of Drishyam 2, with Georgekutty living his life as a theater owner and film producer. Drawing inspiration from his own family’s story, he creates a film called Drishyam, which soon becomes the talk of the town.
As Georgekutty and his family begin returning to normalcy, he may have inadvertently drawn too much attention to himself, with many people noticing parallels between the movie and his own life. As the situation becomes increasingly tense, Georgekutty fears that his secret might finally be exposed, deeply affecting his psyche, especially with both traditional and social media turning their focus toward him.
The film explores whether Georgekutty manages to survive, protect his family once again, and the price he may have to pay for it.
Alongside Mohanlal, the movie also stars Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Siddique, Asha Sarath, Santhi Mayadevi, Veena Nandakumar, and others in key roles.
