In the past couple of years, Bollywood has witnessed a lot of women-centric films powered by actresses like Kangana Ranaut, the late Sridevi, Vidya Balan and Alia Bhatt among many. Its been long overdue, but finally, actresses in South Indian film industry are also making a mark. Also, the audience has turned smart and preferred the powerful women characters. In the last few years, South Indian beauties like Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Trisha, Samantha Akkineni, Jyotika and Anushka Shetty among others have got tremendous change with their powerful roles. 

Films have the strongest influence on the audience, and over the years, the Indian film industry has undergone a transformation with more women being shown as independent and in strong roles on the big screen. More confident and career-oriented roles are something that the audience is always looking forward to. During one of the interviews last year for her film U-Turn, Samantha Akkineni made a very realistic statement. She said, "As female leads in the south industry, we are automatically expected to become dumber." But the actresses have now broken the mold by carving out niece for self in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film industry. 

For the longest time, we have seen how male actors are addressed as one ‘man’ show, while the actresses are addressed as ‘glam dolls’. 2012: 22 Female Kottayam:

This is said to be Rima Kallingal's one of the best performances till date. Directed by Aashiq Abu, the film saw Rima in the role of a nurse, Tessa. 2017: Aramm:

The social-political drama saw Nayanthara in a very powerful performance as an honest democrat named Madhivadhani. Also, Nayanthara's Tamil horror film, Maya is also one of her best films that left audience surprised. 

2018: Mahanati:

Mahanati was one of the much talked about films last year. Biopic on the legendary female superstar Savitri, the film saw Keerthy Suresh portraying the character and proved to be brilliant actor once again. The film also starred Samantha Akkineni, Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Deverakonda. 

2018: U Turn:

With Oh Baby in the kitty, Samantha Akkineni already won hearts of the audience last year with a strong role as a journalist in U Turn. The actress played the role of an intern at a newspaper publications who investigates accidents occurring on a flyover with the help of a crime reporter. However, she gets accused of murdering a motorist. She totally nailed it! 

2014: How Old Are You:

The film marked Manju Warrier's return to the films. Manju played a powerful role that was relatable to many women in India. The story of the film revolved around Nirupama, a mother and wife, who set off the dreams and aspirations aside for their family. 

2016: Take Off:

Starring Parvathy in the lead role, the film is based on the real-life incident of the rescue of Indian nurses stuck in Iraq due to the ISIS attack in 2014. The film starred the biggest Malayalam superstars – Kunchacko Boban and Fahadh Faasil in the lead roles. The actress nailed it with her de-glam look.
