Legendary film-maker J Mahendran passed away on Tuesday morning, April 2 at his residence in Chennai. This came as shocking news to the South Indian Film industry. Many celebrities took to Twitter and paid their final respects to the Tamil director. Superstar Rajinikanth also paid a visit to J Mahendran at his residence in Chennai. Petta director Karthik Subbaraj also took to Twitter and mourned the death of the legendary director. Karthik Subbaraja, the director of Petta and Jigarthanda shared an emotional post and expressed how J Mahendran's death is a huge loss to the film industry. 

Karthik Subbaraja tweeted, "Missing you so much MR.Mahendran sir.. Can't come out of Ur thoughts from yesterday.. Thanks for your time in Petta..Will cherish every bit of your presence,the long conversations & enlightenment u gave us.. Love you sir.. Rest in Peace..THE Legend...THE King of Filmmaking (sic)." To people who don't know, J Mahendran featured in Karthik Subbaraj's latest film, Petta.

J Mahendran has also appeared as an actor in a few films, last being Rajinikanth's Petta. He also played the role of a villain in Vijay’s Theri and the film won him the Best Villain Award at IIFA Utsavam in 2017. He was also seen in Vijay Sethupathi’s 'Seethakaathi' playing a small role.
