Prithviraj Sukumaran recalls over 90 takes with Mahesh Babu in Varanasi; Urges THIS for Malayalam cinema
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mahesh Babu are next set to appear together in the SS Rajamouli directorial Varanasi.
Prithviraj Sukumaran is all set to hit the big screens with his film I, Nobody, slated for release on July 9, 2026. Ahead of its release, the actor was seen in a conversation where he recalled doing more than 90 takes for Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu.

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Prithviraj Sukumaran recalled how he and Mahesh Babu had to perform more than 90 takes for a single shot because SS Rajamouli was not satisfied with the outcome.
Prithviraj said, “This is not an exaggeration. For one particular shot in the film, Mahesh Babu and I started shooting in the morning. I am not sure whether it was take 94 or 97. Later, we went for a lunch break after hours of filming. However, just when we thought we would have a second mouthful of food, he called us back to the set.”
The actor added that they continued working on the same shot until around 6:30 or 7 pm. However, since the director was still not fully satisfied with it, both he and Mahesh were asked to return the next day to film the sequence again.
Varanasi is an upcoming epic time-travel adventure film slated to release in theaters on April 7, 2027. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the movie features Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead roles, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas also playing a key character.
Moreover, during the same interview, Prithviraj Sukumaran spoke about headliing Dharma Productions’ Malayalam debut, Odiyan. Emphasizing his desire to see more producers enter Malayalam cinema, the actor said, “If it were anyone else, I might have convinced Rahul to offer the film to me directly. But I share a great relationship with Karan. I said, ‘Okay, since it is Dharma, go to Dharma and pitch the project. If there is any issue, anything at all, we will do it.’”
The actor revealed that Karan Johar called him the very next day and confirmed that they would be moving forward with the film. He concluded, “I hope all of you (producers) come to Malayalam cinema, change nothing, and learn a lot of things.”
