Rajinikanth. That one word is enough to send fans into a frenzy. Starting as an anti-hero in his guru K Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal, he slowly came on to his own, transitioning into lead characters in movies like Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai, Moondru Mudichu and such. Of course, now he’s in a position where no one can touch him. As the actor celebrates his birthday today, movie stars and Rajinikanth’s fans have been showering him with wishes since morning.

On his 69th birthday, here’s a list of 5 movies of superstar that you should not miss to watch.

1. Moondru Mudichu

This movie saw Rajinikanth take up the role of a real baddie. Directed by K Balachandar, this movie had Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in lead roles. Rajinikanth falls in love with his best friend’s girlfriend (Sridevi) and murders his friend (Kamal Haasan) after realizing that Sridevi’s love for his friend is unchangeable. Sridevi, who learns that Rajinikanth is the murderer, takes revenge by marrying Rajinikanth’s own father. This movie has a lot of nail biting scenes and the song sequence in which the trio goes on a boat ride (Vasantha Kaala Nadhigalile), is iconic.

2. Thillu Mullu

This is yet another K Balachandar film, which portrayed Rajinikanth in an unseen shade. The comic movie is Tamil remake of Hindi film Gol Mal. The interview sequence of Rajinikanth with Thengai Srinivasan is an iconic scene. When a carefree Rajinikanth gets a job with a boss who has old-school ideas, Rajinikanth cooks up a twin brother and the movie takes a twist when his boss’ daughter falls for him. Kamal Haasan played a cameo role, and he appears in the climax as a lawyer.

3. Baasha

Directed by Suresh Krissna, Baasha is one of the evergreen movies of the superstar. Rajinikanth played the role of a Mumbai don, who later changes his lifestyle in order to keep up the promise he made to his father. Nagma played the lead lady and even today, the movie has a huge fan base.

4. Thalapathi

Ace director Mani Ratnam’s one of the most iconic movies is Thalapathi. Rajinikanth played the role of a gangster’s (Mammootty) close aide. The movie is based on characters from the great epic Mahabaratha – Karna, Duryodhana. Thalapathi is a critically acclaimed film and with major twists and turns in the plot, the movie will keep you hooked for every second.

5. Petta

After a series of Rajinikanth movies, which were subtle, Petta came as a treat for fans who were hungry for Rajinism. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie had Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Simran, Trisha, Sasikumar, Bobby Simha in lead roles. This is a must-watch movie and Thalaivar’s charisma was flawlessly captured in every scene.
