Sardar 2: Director PS Mithran talks about Karthi’s spy actioner, says ‘Begins from simple level, goes international’

Sardar 2, starring Karthi in the lead role, is slated to release in theatres on September 10, 2026. Directed by PS Mithran, the filmmaker has shared details about the sequel, underscoring how the actor’s involvement was crucial to the movie’s completion.
Sardar 2: Director spills the beans on Karthi starrer spy actioner
Speaking with Ananda Vikatan, PS Mithran said, “A major part of the journey involves both versions of Karthi moving together through the story. Without the hero’s intense involvement, it would have been very difficult to complete this film. He had to completely immerse himself in the project and work with passion and determination. That’s exactly what Karthi did.”
The director added, “Sardar 2 focuses on the psychological and emotional aspects of how that mission ultimately concludes. It has shaped up as a proper action spy thriller, with no compromises. What we usually know about espionage is that it occurs between countries. But here, espionage begins at a very simple level and expands all the way to the international stage. It is also the story of shadowy people who move around unnoticed, without even leaving a shadow behind.”
Sardar 2 is an upcoming film, and the makers recently unveiled its teaser. The glimpse revisits the high-stakes world of espionage introduced in the first film. Karthi reprises his dual roles as the father-son duo, while SJ Suryah appears as the primary antagonist, Black Dagger.
Apart from Karthi and SJ Suryah, the teaser also offers glimpses of Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, and Rajisha Vijayan. The movie is a sequel to the 2022 film Sardar.
The original movie followed Vijay Prakash, an officer who tries to make a name for himself while overcoming the negative perception surrounding his father, Chandra Bose, aka spy agent Sardar, who is accused of being a traitor. Years later, Vijay learns the truth about his father and discovers that he had taken the blame to protect his country. After decades apart, Vijay reunites with his father as they face the same threat.
Karthi’s work front
Following Sardar 2, Karthi will next appear in the lead role in the period action drama Marshal. Moreover, the actor also has films lined up with directors Kalyan Shankar and Mohan Raja.
