The weekend is here and so are we with our weekly edition of 'South Newsmakers'. This week has been an eventful one to the South entertainment industry especially for Mollywood as the most awaited film Drishyam 2 was released the previous week. From Soorarai Pottru’s Oscar entry to the release of Jagame Thandhiram, Kollywood had a bunch of exciting developments, while the motion poster of Suryaputra Mahavir Karna came as an unexpected one. Let's take a look at the top news that hit the headlines this week.

1. Jeethu Joseph confirmed Drishyam 3: Director Jeethu Joseph confirmed that the third installment of Drishyam is on the cards. Speaking to the media, the director said that he has a tremendous climax for Drishyam 3. While addressing a press conference in Kottayam Press Club, the director made this unexpected announcement. He added that the film will not be rolled out before three years and he has finalized the climax.

2. 14 scenes to be removed from Pogaru: Following controversies and uproar, Pogaru director Nandakishore agreed to remove 14 scenes from his film. This comes after members of the Brahmin community got offended with certain scenes. Starring Dhruva Sarja and Rashmika Mandanna, Pogaru released in theatres on February 19 and was criticized widely for the inclusion some alleged offensive scenes.

3. Desingh Periyasamy and Niranjani AHathiyan’s wedding: Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal Director Desingh Periyasamy tied the knot with actress Niranjani Ahathian on February 25 in Puducherry. The couple got married in a traditional ceremony, which was ket a simple affair owing to the pandemic. In the photos, they both looked their stunning best on their special day. In the photos that surfaced online, the newly married couple looked radiant flashing their happy smiles.

4. Ponniyin Selvan’s latest shooting schedule wrapped up: Costume designer Ekta Lakhani, who is on board Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, took to her Instagram space and shared a photo while announcing that they have wrapped up the latest schedule. She shared a photo with the crew members, and Mani Ratnam was also seen in the photo. The shooting took place at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad where huge sets were reportedly constructed for to shoot the historic drama.

5. Soorarai Pottru’s Oscar entry: The makers of Soorarai Pottru have announced that the film has joined the Oscars in the eligibility list of Best Actor and Best Film. Soorarai Pottru is directed by Sudha Kongara and features Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in the lead roles. While announcing the news, the makers stated that they were elated to hear it. They wrote, “We are elated and thrilled!!! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS!!!”

6. Jagame Thandhiram’s teaser release and announcement on OTT release: The makers of Jagame Thandhiram released the film’s teaser and announced that the film will be released on Netflix soon. While fans have been waiting to know if the film will get a theatrical release, the film’s director Karthik Subbaraj has now revealed that the film will get a direct release on OTT platform. It has Dhanush and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead roles.

7. Suryaputra Mahavir Karna motion poster: The most awaited film Suryaputra Mahavir Karna’s motion poster was released by the makers. Sources close to the makers of the film told us that Chiyaan Vikram walked out of the film owing to unavailability of dates. An actor from the B -town is all set to be brought on board to replace Vikram in the film. The multilingual project is written and directed by R S Vimal.
