Last week, the fantasy action entertainer Karuppu was released after a day’s delay. However, it succeeded in taking the box office by storm, crossing the Rs 200 crore mark in just over a week. However, alongside its financial hit, the film has sparked a massive buzz online. Several viral videos show the audience weeping, cheering, and seemingly experiencing a strong divine energy during the high-octane climax. Here’s what director and actor RJ Balaji has to say about it.

RJ Balaji says people feeling divine energy in cinemas is not a PR stunt

After the appalling visuals went viral, a section of people online accused the makers of using a promotional campaign and manufacturing the visuals to promote the film. Responding directly to the rumors that the film's production house was paying people to stage emotional and spiritual outbursts in theaters, RJ Balaji clarified that the reaction is entirely organic.

Speaking to the media, the actor and director of Karuppu pointed out that they simply don't have the financial standing to orchestrate such a massive stunt. He said, “Some people said that the production house must have sent people to theatres to feel ecstatic and dance in devotion. We don’t have the budget to send people like that. What’s really special is that the audience themselves are celebrating the film like their own.”

Balaji further emphasized his satisfaction with how the core social message of the film has resonated with the public. “I am satisfied with what we have said to society. You will understand it only after watching the film. Whoever has watched the film is really enjoying it, Tamil Nadu is enjoying it to the fullest, so I’m very happy. I have made this movie for the people, so we’re happy they’re celebrating the movie,” Hindustan Times quoted him saying.

Following reports of audiences being deeply moved, both RJ Balaji and lead actor Suriya issued gentle public advisories. They urged moviegoers to offer compassion, space, and first aid to anyone visibly overwhelmed during the screenings, while asking them to refrain from recording those sensitive moments on mobile phones.

Karuppu is a high-concept fantasy action-drama written and directed by RJ Balaji. Produced by S. R. Prabhu and S. R. Prakash Babu, the film marks Suriya’s 45th leading role. It also stars Trisha Krishnan, RJ Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natty Subramaniam, Yogi Babu, Mansoor Ali Khan, and more.
