Tamil director and cinematographer R Chezhiyan passes away, Vijay Sethupathi mourns his demise
Ace director and cinematographer, R Chezhiyan passed away in Chennai on July 10, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

The Tamil film fraternity is in mourning following the passing of renowned cinematographer, director, and author R. Chezhiyan. According to reports, the acclaimed artist passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital in Taramani, Chennai, before succumbing to his prolonged illness.

Grief struck the Tamil film industry when ace cinematographer, director, and author R. Chezhiyan left for heavenly abode at the age of 57. Soon after the news of his demise spread, the industry came together to remember him.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), actor Vijay Sethupathi dropped an image of Chezhiyan and wrote, “Rest in peace, Chezhiyan sir.”
Vijay was joined by writer and producer Adham Bava, who also expressed his shock on social media. In his long post, Bava penned, “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of my dear friend, cinematographer, and director Mr. Chezhiyan. His noble nature—always wearing a smile and interacting with everyone with simplicity and affection—along with his rare artistic contributions to the Tamil film industry, will forever remain in our memories.”
He added, “I pray to the Almighty that his soul rests in peace. I extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to his grieving family, relatives, friends, and everyone in the film fraternity. May God grant them the strength, comfort, and peace to endure this immense loss.”
M.Sasikumar also mourned his loss.
Born in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, R. Chezhiyan initially pursued a degree in civil engineering before pivoting to follow his true passion for photography and storytelling. He moved to Chennai and honed his craft under great artists.
Chezhiyan made his independent debut as a cinematographer with the 2007 film Kalloori. Over the next two decades, he became a celebrated technician, known for his ability to capture raw, lived experiences with honesty. His impressive filmography includes critically acclaimed works such as Rettaisuzhi, Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, Magizhchi, Paradesi, and Joker, to name a few.
Chezhiyan successfully transitioned from behind the camera to the director's chair with his debut film, To Let, in 2017. The film garnered widespread critical acclaim and won him multiple accolades. It was also screened at numerous international film festivals, cementing his reputation as a versatile storyteller.
Beyond his work in cinema, Chezhiyan was a respected writer and educator. He authored several books, including Ulaga Cinema. He also ran The Film School, where he shared his expertise with the next generation of filmmakers.
