Rajinikanth is yet to begin work on his next movie, tentatively titled Thalaivar173. With reports suggesting that Ashwath Marimuthu has stepped in to take over the project, the makers appear to have all but confirmed it.

Ashwath Marimuthu confirmed to helm Thalaivar173?

In a post on social media, the makers of Thalaivar173 shared a birthday video for director Ashwath Marimuthu. The video was presented in the same style as the Thalaivar173 announcement promo. While an official confirmation is yet to be made, it appears that the upcoming Rajinikanth film has undergone a transition with the change in director.

Here’s the post:

Thalaivar173 was initially announced with director Sundar C. However, the filmmaker later exited the project, citing prior commitments. Director Cibi Chakaravarthi then stepped in to helm the film, which was expected to be an action thriller featuring Basil Joseph and Priyanka Arul Mohan in pivotal roles.

However, Cibi's involvement in a Telugu project appears to have led him to step away from the film. Now, it seems that Dragon fame Ashwath Marimuthu will take over as director. While an official confirmation is still awaited, Thalaivar173 was previously announced for a Pongal 2027 release.

Earlier, Ashwath had revealed that he had narrated a story to Rajinikanth, who reportedly liked it. As the director was expected to next helm STR51, starring Silambarasan TR in the lead role, that project may take some time to go on floors, with the Thug Life actor currently occupied with Arasan.

Rajinikanth’s next film

Rajinikanth is next set to play the lead role in Jailer 2. The upcoming sequel is expected to continue the story of Muthuvel Pandian following the events of the first installment.

Apart from the superstar, the film also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in key roles. Additionally, Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are expected to reprise their roles in the sequel. While the makers have yet to announce an official release date, reports suggest that the film could hit the big screens on September 11, 2026.

Earlier, there were reports that Shah Rukh Khan might make a cameo appearance in the film. However, the actor is said to have declined the offer to focus entirely on King. Now, rumors suggest that the makers are in talks with Hrithik Roshan for the same role, although no official confirmation has been made.
