Varanasi: SS Rajamouli to wrap up Mahesh Babu starrer epic film by October 2026? Confirms major portions completed
Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is the upcoming epic adventure film directed by SS Rajamouli.
Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer Varanasi is slated to release in theaters on April 7, 2027. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the filmmaker has now shared an update on when the film’s shoot is expected to wrap up.
Varanasi: SS Rajamouli’s epic movie to wrap up by October 2026?
In a recent interview with Variety, SS Rajamouli said, “What I can say is we have completed a major portion of the shoot. All the important, large-scale action sequences are done.”
He added, “We are now working on the smaller, interconnecting scenes, so hopefully, by September, or maybe a little into October, we should finish shooting.”
Varanasi is an upcoming epic time-travel adventure film that follows a Shiva devotee on a perilous quest across time to uncover a lost cosmic artifact of immense power. As he pieces together ancient secrets hidden through the centuries, he realizes the truth behind his mission: the very force that set him on this path is a calculating mastermind with a vision of absolute global domination.
In addition to his main role, Mahesh Babu has confirmed that he will also portray Lord Rama in one of the film’s episodes. The film is being mounted on a massive scale, with more details about the cast yet to be announced.
Earlier, there was speculation that the movie would be released as a two-part venture. However, the director himself has confirmed that the project will be released as a single film with a runtime of around three hours.
Director SS Rajamouli recently appeared at the Annecy Animation Festival’s work-in-progress panel to introduce the filmmakers behind Baahubali: The Eternal War. The upcoming animated film, helmed by Ishan Shukla, is part of the Baahubali franchise and explores a celestial conflict that takes place in the divine realm after the demise of Amarendra Baahubali.
Additionally, Studio Khara, the Japan-based animation studio behind the Evangelion franchise, has joined Baahubali: The Eternal War – Part 1 to create a dedicated animated sequence for the film.
Moreover, the docu-series Baahubali: The Torchbearer hinted that the world of Baahubali could expand with a possible third installment.
