The Tamil film industry is in a state of deep mourning following the sudden demise of veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj. The legendary artist passed away at the age of 73 after suffering a major cardiac arrest in Chennai on June 27, 2026. His sudden departure marks the end of an illustrious era for cinema, where he was widely celebrated for his unparalleled screenplay writing and exceptional mastery over family-centric entertainment.

According to reports, the final funeral is scheduled to take place at 1:30 PM at the Besant Nagar crematorium in Chennai, where colleagues and fans will gather to pay their final respects. Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, noted actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, alongside their two children, actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj. Notably, the filmmaker had remained active and high-spirited in his public life until his final days, recently traveling to Goa to attend the wedding of actor Khushbu Sundar's daughter.
About K Bhagyaraj
The late screenwriter was born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, his journey into the cinematic arts began as an apprentice. He refined his craft as an assistant director under the legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja before breaking out to establish a highly successful independent career. He quickly evolved into one of the most influential creative voices of the 1980s and 1990s, defining a golden era of cinema by prioritizing socially rooted storytelling and highly relatable characters.
Over a career spanning five decades, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and performed in over 75 movies. Hailed as the "Screenplay King" of the region, his iconic filmography includes critically acclaimed classics such as Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, and Darling, Darling, Darling.
