The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards bring the best of the best together in one place for the biggest night in the year for television. South Korean superhit money chaser ‘Squid Game’ found itself at the cusp of creating history at the event. Grabbing 14 powerful nominations, it was a night to be remembered for the cast and crew.
In attendance for the main night of awards were actors Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, Jung Ho Yeon, Oh Young Soo and director Hwang Dong Hyuk who also acts as the writer and creator for ‘Squid Game’. Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon took to the stage as presenters as the audience waited with bated breath for any wins for the show.
Lo and behold, as the end of the night approached, it was director Hwang Dong Hyuk who saw himself ascending the stage. He was announced as the winner of the Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series category. His fellow show contributors in tears, the man delivered an inspiring speech to the audience who celebrated the historical moment with him.
“People keep telling me like, ‘I made history’. But I don't think I made history by myself because it was you who opened up the doors for ‘Squid Game’, inviting us here tonight at the Emmys. So I believe I have to say we all made history together.”
He continued to a cheering crowd, “I truly hope ‘Squid Game’ won’t be the last non-English series here to be nominated at the Emmys. I also hope this won’t be my last Emmy either. I’ll be back with season 2. Thank you.”
