We are looking back at September 2019 when Stephen Colbert played a clip of BTS singing the Beatles’s “Hey Jude” for Paul McCartney himself! The clip was from the time when BTS appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in May, the group did an impressive Beatles-inspired performance of their hit “Boy with Luv” as the show highlighted how the global excitement about the group is similar to the famous “Beatlemania” of fan frenzy surrounding the Beatles in the 1960s. During their interview, Stephen Colbert asked them if they have favorite Beatles songs, and J-Hope led his fellow members in a rousing rendition of the chorus to “Hey Jude.”

When Stephen Colbert sat down with Paul McCartney in the latest episode of his talk show, he showed the video to Paul McCartney, who clapped after he watched them sing. “What do you think it is about your music that transcends geographic and language barriers so that those seven guys would just jump up and start the ‘na na na’s?” asked Stephen Colbert. “Easy lyrics?” joked Paul McCartney.

Back in November 2020, McCartney appeared as a guest on Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes’ podcast SmartLess. Whereat one point, when asked whether there were any current pop acts that he listens to because of “that true artistry” that The Beatles also had back in the day, the legendary musician immediately named BTS as the first artist that came to mind. Paul McCartney explained, “For me, it’s not really because of the music like it is for the fans, but for me, it’s [about] just seeing some young kids go through what we went through. BTS— Korean guys. I like watching them and seeing what’s going on. I think they’re good.” “I couldn’t sing one of their songs,” he added, “but I like them.”
