Is the West threatened by BTS? What BTS losing at the Grammy Awards implies about the music industry at large

BTS has officially made history as the first-ever K-Pop group to have a completely dedicated Grammy performance. However, the 2021 Grammys also went down in history for depriving BTS, once again, of their deserved Grammy Award. This is not to say that the winners of the Grammy in the category that BTS were nominated in do not deserve their applause but rather to highlight how the Recording Academy continues to keep at bay, any and all worldly influences that are threatening the Western norm. Ever since the dawn of the right of K-Pop, BTS has especially jeopardized the cultural imperialism and stronghold of Western entertainment on the world. Not just musically but BTS as an entity, a force, took the world by storm and for good reason too. Their constant pushback against gender norms, sonic restrictions, language barriers and other temporal malice has reconstructed their identity from being a "K-Pop/Korean group" (which is what they were introduced as before their Grammy performance) to global figures advocating for self-love and campaigning against violence, changing the world one song at a time.

However, this scale is naturally still unacceptable to authorities like The Recording Academy which has long been a Western-dominated institution. It is worth mentioning that the Grammys sure have come a long way. There's no veiling the fact that the Grammys were unbelievably biased towards white artistry and it's only in recent times that this has seen a significant change. However, the 2021 Grammys decided to push the categories of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance to the pre-telecast show. This means that they were excluded from the main event. One would have to be ignorant to not notice the glaring discrepancy in this decision. R&B and Hip-Hop originated in the African American community and these genres still continue to be predominantly carried on their backs. The very industry that profits the most from the African American community fails to bring it under the spotlight. Similarly, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance is a category that has repeatedly been televised, and yet, the one time BTS is nominated, for some reason apparently, it can't be included in the main lineup. There may not be any explicit racial undertones in this decision but there's no denying that the Grammys don't have the cleanest records when it comes to the same.

Western ideals continue to be upheld and reinforced and the token 'Black Lives Matter' representation is not nearly enough to subvert the systemic oppression inherent in the industry towards people and artists of color. Racism against Asians in America has especially spiked during the pandemic and BTS embodies cultural and political representation for all those people who suffer under this discriminatory normalcy. The reason why such representation is important really needs no explanation. The Western music industry (and this, in no way, implies the artists in it) is deliberately dismissive of outward forces that threaten its bastion and they're making it painfully obvious. BTS might not have won the Grammy this year but they'll only get bigger and better until the Grammys cannot possibly accommodate them in their narrow worldview anymore.

Anonymous : BTS was the only actual duo or group nominated. All the other acts were collaborations. Not duos or groups. That was their correct category and should have been their victory. ChloexHailey is a duo, the Jonas Brothers is a group...BTS is a group. Lady Gaga and Ariana was a collaboration.
