Trade experts predict a Bollywood Bonanza in the second quarter of 2015.

As we know, the first quarter of the 2015 was very average for Bollywood. Though there were a few films which managed to do well, there weren't any blockbuster as such. People were complaining that the market is down since big-budget films such as Tevar, Dolly Ki Doli, Shamitabh and Roy only managed to make a few bucks, but on the other hand small budget films such as Badlapur, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and NH10 managed to double their profits. So, in that case the market did well.

This debate will go on, but it is safe to say that there wasn't any film that could have made it in to the 100 crore, 200 crore and 300 crore bracket. Will the second quarter see a change in the on-going trend?

To get a hold of things, we spoke to few people having knowledge about these intricacies. We spoke to Exhibitor & Distributor - Akshaye Rathi; the Vice President of Programming and Distribution at Inox - Rajender Singh Jyala; and owner of G7 cinemas - Manoj Desai. Let's find out what they have to say about the second quarter.

On Business picking up in this quarter-

Akshaye Rathi : The first quarter of 2015 was bad. Yes, small budget films did fare well but generally big budget films are the one’s which get money into the industry and helps it to function well. Unfortunately, only Baby and Badlapur did well from the mid and high budget films. For the industry to survive every city, center, cinema and distributor needs to do well. You can’t have a good quarter when some small films have a good run in limited multiplexes or cinemas. The other exhibitors and distributors also need something to survive and that’s what a big budget film does. Definitely the business will
pick up in this quarter and I can say the second quarter has started in an amazing fashion with Furious 7, which has the widest Hollywood release in India this time around. It has also done good numbers till now.

Rajender Singh Jyala : This quarter has a great line up of films which makes me feel that it will be great. Today itself, Fast & Furious 7 opened very well. Tomorrow we have Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, after that Ek Paheli Leela, Avengers and Mr. X, followed by Gabbar, Piku, Bombay Velvet, Welcome Back and so on. So, we have a great line up of
films, which indicates that it will be a better quarter. The last quarter saw a number of small budget films do well, we also saw this trend earlier with Aashiqui 2, Queen, English Vinglish and a few other films performing better than expected too. Hence, if the content is good and well packaged, then small or big budget doesn’t matter.

Manoj Desai : Everyone is expecting the second quarter to be better than the first. We endured a bad time in the first quarter, so to counter that I have converted my Gemini cinema into an English theatre and from today we started with Fast & Furious 7. It has opened very well.

On the expectations from films in this quarter-

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! :

Rajender Singh Jyala says, "According to me, the film will do well. A film in the detective genre is always fun to watch and the Byomkesh brand is already popular which will work in its favour. Byomkesh films have released in Bengali but never in Hindi, so we expect it to be popular, especially in Kolkatta. The promos are also looking good."

Ek Paheli Leela :

Akshaye Rathi mentions, "Ek Paheli Leela has all the right elements to entertain the masses. They have a really good story
along with really good music, then they have Sunny Leone and also sex in the mix. When these all are put together, they form an explosive combination, which will do great in multiplexes as well as in cinemas of Tier II & III cities. Also it is being produced by T-series, who never leave anything when it comes to promotions and marketing. It will be a good watch."

Mr. X :

Akshaye Rathi comments, "This is an Emraan Hashmi film in the zone where he is popular since the longest of time, even before he started doing Shanghai and the sensitive Cinema. Also, the last time Vikram Bhatt and Emraan came together, they made a blockbuster, Raaz 3. This combination plus good music plus the interesting concept will help the film. If you see the trailer of the film, it plays from the gallery of an Emraan Hashmi audience, I mean in that 1 and a half minute trailer he had three kissing sequences. That showcases the audience it is catering to and actually that is the core audience of an Emraan Hashmi film, so it will do great."

Gabbar :

Manoj Desai suggests, "If Gabbar is as good as the original south Indian film, it will do wonders. Akshay Kumar is appearing in the sole lead role after a few films, this will help the film rake in the audience. There are high expectation from the film, but it all depends upon the story now."

Piku :

Manoj Desai states, "Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in a different avatar again, plus you have a very talented heroine Deepika alongside him and lastly the simple and sweet story of a father-daughter relationship, all these factors will work for the film."

Bombay Velvet :

Rajender Singh Jyala mentions, "Everybody is waiting to see Ranbir Kapoor in a lead role again and he will be the factor
that will help the film. I feel Bombay Velvet will do wonders with it's interesting story line and wonderful cast. For me this will be the biggest film of this quarter."

Welcome Back :

Akshay Rathi tells us, "Anees Bazmi is coming back after a long time and he is a director who knows the commercial
sensibilities of a film. John Abraham has also established himself as a crowd puller over the years, so I think Welcome Back will be a cracker of a movie. Also, the kind of ensemble cast it has with the likes of Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal, I think it will be a laugh riot."

Dil Dhadakane Do :

Manoj Desai says, "Zoya Akhtar is a great director and the story seems interesting. I guess the star-cast will also help her film do well."

Hamari Adhuri Kahani :

Rajender Singh Jyala comments, "The film has a natural love story and the songs are going to be the plus points for the film. Mohit Suri is also a trump card for this film."

ABCD 2 :

Akshaye Rathi echoes, "These are the films that make you feel very optimistic of the forth-coming quarter. Remo is a director of great commercial sensibilities. It’s a huge scale movie as it has been shot in Las Vegas. The stars, Varun Dhawan and Shradha Kapoor will also help elevate the film."
