Neetu Kapoor told the world on Twitter how she manages to keep diabetes at bay by starting her day with a morning drink of Tulsi leaves and cinnamon powder. Focused on healthy living and eating, this Kapoor mum proves that choosing small portions of nutritious food is the way forward. Crash diets are not ideal for weight loss or good health.

Here’s a look at the foods that Bollywood stars swear by, and love to dig in despite the rigorous pressure to look picture perfect always! However, replicating celebrity food choices and diets is not the way forward for anyone; consultation with a dietitian is absolutely essential.

Shah Rukh Khan: His physique at 49 would put many a young man to shame. SRK’s lean, muscular body has stayed that way for years now, thanks to a high protein, poultry based diet (in fact, it is also called the Shah Rukh Khan diet by a website). He eats grilled lean meats, chicken and fish. His carb intake is limited to two slices of brown bread in the morning and supplements it with portions of vegetables. He also has coffee and non-fat milk. Legumes and beans offer extra protein. That he is sporty and active also helps, ensuring that he gains less weight.

Salman Khan: This is one Khan who eats pretty much everything! From his mother’s home cooked biryani, to chats and snacks from popular local eateries, Salman does NOT diet. He also eats absolute no nos like fried fish and eggs with the yoke on a regular basis. Salman prefers home cooked meals and opts for salads and soups regularly too. He eats a heavy breakfast. But with his comprehensive work out- combination of gym, swimming, cycling - he burns nearly 2500-3000 calories a day.

Akshay Kumar: He is the chief naturopath of Bollywood and perhaps the most disciplined actor of his generation. Akshay Kumar believes in eating healthy, home cooked food that offers raw and natural options. He avoids all processed food religiously. Eating brown rice, nuts and fruits, whole milk over protein shakes, supplements and pills, the Khiladi has a naturally lean and tough physique that endures pain and exhaustion from action sequences nonchalantly. Akshay loves to eat sweets, but post 7PM he doesn’t eat anything at all. His favourite foods are South East Asian cuisine: Thai green curry, Miso Soup, Sashimi and Sushi. And yes, this superfit foodie is also a fabulous, experienced cook, having done some cooking professionally in Bangkok years ago.

Deepika Padukone: She is a naturally gifted beauty, who does not starve herself to get in shape. Athletic from a young age, Deepika eats healthy, but eats mostly everything. Many might be surprised to know that she still eats freshly baked white bread! But her favourite forms of food belong to cuisine families that are naturally healthy - South Indian and Mediterranean. Fond of big breakfasts, she likes South Indian dishes like rasam, appam and also likes to toss up a fresh Mediterranean salad with pan-fried basa fish. Eating greens bassa fish drinking vegetable juices is also something she does regularly. Deepika eats frequent meals and exercises 6 days a week.

Tiger Shroff: Some call him his lifestyle monkish; we think it is simply amazing. Tiger Shroff works out for 5-6 hours a day, starting with free style workouts like martial arts on the beach. An impressive dancer, despite hours spent training in the gym, his focus on South East Asian martial arts has ensured that he retains flexibility and does not metamorphose into beefcake. Little is known about what he eats (or when he eats really, after all that exercising!) but he is fond of peanut butter; and is fond of Japanese food which tends to be low on oil and fats and uses fresh vegetables. Tiger also drinks 7-8 litres of water a day. And yes, he doesn’t drink or smoke and never, ever indulges his sweet tooth.

Katrina Kaif: Katrina Kaif swears by a macrobiotic diet. Her body is lean and slender but not emaciated. In fact, her lean yet curvaceous body (a natural gift from Mother Nature to Indian women) has become so after years of meticulous effort. Kat drinks 4 glasses of water to start off her day and stays away from a popular form of food for weight loss- chicken! She stays away from starch, avoiding rice. Instead she swears by boiled vegetables, grilled fish and fruits. Raw food and a wheatgrass supplement, with acai berry is the secret to her glowing skin. And when she has to indulge her sweet tooth, she loves to dig into a cinnamon roll. She also loves sushi and likes to indulge in dahi and rice in Indian cuisine. Having grown up on a palette that is light on spices, Kat is fond of simple whole foods.

Kareena Kapoor Khan: She turned vegetarian and managed to stick to her choice despite being a pukka Punjabi foodie! Kareena chose vegetarian food to achieve a healthier lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight. She swears by yoga and practices it every day. She also occasionally trains in Pilates with celebrity fitness trainer Yasmin Karachiwala. Yet her svelte, lean figure is not thanks to a soup, salad and juice diet alone. Kareena is fond of Italian food and loves spaghetti. She is also equally partial to home cooked Indian cuisine - daal, roti, sabjis garnished with desi ghee. Ghee or clarified butter is loaded with health benefits that often get ignored in today’s weight loss crazy times. Even when she had chosen the size zero figure for the ill-fated ‘Tashan’, Kareena didn’t give up on her aloo ka parathas for breakfast.

Sonam Kapoor: Sonam Kapoor has lost over 15 kgs as a teenager to look her picture perfect form. A true foodie who has explored the street food of Mumbai and also Delhi during her early years, Sonam still enjoys stirring up a few dishes and eating well. She makes Indian desserts like suji ka halwa and chocolate-based desserts. She also loves to eat Pav Bhaji made with healthy ingredients now, of course. Sonam likes eating fish and seafood, as these are lean meats. One of her favourite forms of food is the bhapa ilish, steamed hilsa fish, a Bengali delicacy. Occasionally biting into a slice of cake, a flour dish that most weight loss aspirants run miles away from, Sonam beats quite a few weight loss clichés with her fondness for tasty food across cuisines.
