We’ve all been through the pain of finding the right shade of foundation and concealer and there’s no denying that! No matter how expensive store we go to and get hundreds of swatches on our hands, we still sometimes pick out the wrong shade. The million different finishes and textures just do not seem to help us. If you go darker, it makes you look sunburnt and if we go lighter if makes us look pale and ghost-like. There’s a great chance that the foundation you are using right now also does not match your skin tone perfectly. But, one thing that can make this task easier is if you find the right undertone.

Well, now you may ask - what is the skin’s undertone?

First things first - your skin tone and undertone are two different things. Your skin tone is what you can see or perceive in the mirror or in daylight. Some skin tones are dark some are light and some just fall between the two so we call it medium. Now, the undertone is an underlying cast of your skin tone and it differs from person to person. The one thing you need to understand is that your skin tone changes from season to season that is your winter and summer skin tone won’t be the same which is why a lot of people switch foundations during seasonal changes. But, your undertone remains the same no matter what.

Now, depending upon your skin tone, you can easily find the undertone that helps you pick the right foundation. According to Cosmopolitan, it is important to know the three different undertones you could have—warm, cool, and neutral.

Warm Skin Undertone: The underlying colours of your skin are yellow, peach, or gold.

Cool Skin Undertone: You have got hints of red and blue tones under your skin.

Neutral Skin Undertone: There’s a mixture of both warm and cool tones.

Now, if you have figured out your undertones, you can easily go makeup shopping as most shades of the foundation have C, W and N mentioned with each shade number.

If you are finding it difficult to find your undertone, here’s a trick for you.

Start by getting all your metallic jewellery out. Now check which jewellery suits you the most - gold or silver. If it is silver, you have cool undertones and if it is gold, you have a warm undertone. If you cannot decide which one looks best, you have a neutral undertone.
