Undertaking weirdest beauty treatments isn’t an unusual thing at all. One such treatment is fish pedicure which has taken the beauty world by storm. In a fish pedicure you are required to dip your feet in a tank full of garra rua fish or ‘doctor fish’. The fish apparently nibbles at the dead skin cells of your feet thus exfoliating your skin in the process and leaving them feeling smooth and soft. Celebrities swear by this form of pedicure and some even claim that this pedicure has therapeutic properties. Despite its seeming advantages, fish pedicures have been banned in certain parts of Europe, Canada and the USA. If you are eager to try the fish pedicure, here are all the reasons why this pedicure can do you more harm than good.

1. It’s cruel to the fishes

Garra rufa fish are imported from Iran, Iraq, Syria or Turkey, and these fish often do not survive the long travel. Unlike what it is made to like, the staple diet of the specie is not dead skin. The fish seem so eager to nibble at your dead skin is only because they are starving and dead skin is their only form of sustenance.

2. The tubs are hardly ever disinfected

Just like any other animals, fish also produce waste. Inevitably the waste gets collected in the pedicure tubs and since they are always full of fish, the salon will hardly ever disinfect the tubs. The fish are incapable of sanitizing themselves and there’s no way for you to know if you have been dipping your feet in a tub of really gross pedicure water!

3. Your pedicure could go horribly wrong

Unlike nail technicians, these fish do not know which parts of your feet they should focus on. Instead of a smooth feet you could come home with bumpy, uneven skin, and parts of your feet that were bitten so deep that you faced bleeding!

4. It might give you a nasty infection

The fish are known to carry certain strains of infection causing bacteria such as Streptococcus agalactiae, which can give you pneumonia! The pedicure tubs are also a fertile breeding ground for bacteria, which means even the tiniest cuts or sores can become infected!
