When it comes to hair care, one thing we dread the most is white hair. We can't stand the thought of having white hair at an early age. White hair is usually resonated with ageing, but now with pollution, lifestyle choices and stress- even teens have started having strands of white hair. Having white hair in old age is acceptable, but having to worry about white hair in your 20s and 30s is devastating.

Both grey and white hair are the results of your hair losing its pigment. When there is a significant reduction in the pigment, the hair turns grey. When there is no pigment present, it turns white. If you are someone who is in their mid-20s and are already facing issues of grey hair, then read below to find out what causes grey hair and how you can reduce it at home naturally.

What causes grey hair?

Genes:

When it comes to grey hair, genes are the dominant factor in determining at what age your hair loses pigment. For some people, it can happen even before they turn 20. For others, the first strands of white appear late.

Melanin deficiency:

Research suggests that mostly a deficiency of melanin is the leading cause of hair whitening. Melanin is produced when your body gets an adequate amount of proteins and nutrients. The lack of these nutrients causes melanin to fall below acceptable levels, which then causes premature hair whitening.

Hormonal imbalance:

Hormones play a key role in the pigmentation of your hair. Hence, a hormonal imbalance can cause your hair to turn white.

Stress and wrong lifestyle:

Excessive intake of alcohol and junk food, along with stress caused by hectic schedule is a major cause of premature greying.

Chemicals:

Sometimes, chemicals used in our shampoos, soaps, hair colours, etc. can cause this problem. However, it can result from some allergic infections as well.

Ways to reduce it naturally:

If genetics are responsible, then not much can be done to reverse the colour of the hair. If the cause is an underlying health problem, consulting a doctor to see what can be done is the best course of action. Once the problem is treated, it may help restore pigment to your hair. Another way to improve pigmentation is by pills of vitamin B-12.

Read below to find out how these home remedies can help you with it.

Black Tea:

Black tea is packed with antioxidants and it helps restrain the growth of white hair. It also helps darken hair colour while adding shine. In a vessel, boil 2 tbsp of black tea in 1 cup of water. Let it sit for a while to cool down. Once cool, strain the liquid and apply it to your hair and scalp. Let it sit for an hour in your hair, then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. For best results, try doing it at least twice a week.

Curry Leaves:

Curry leaves help with the melanin pigment in your hair follicles. Being a rich source of vitamin B, it is essential for hair growth and pigmentation vitamin. In a pan, take a handful of curry leaves and 3 tbsp of coconut oil and let it boil for a while. Once boiled, let the oil cool down for a while. Once it has cooled, strain the oil and massage it into your scalp and work it through the length of your hair. Massage it for 15 minutes and leave the oil on for 30 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo post that. Do it thrice a week for better results.

Fenugreek Seeds:

Fenugreek is packed with nutrients like vitamin C, iron, potassium, and lysine. The nutrients not only help with premature greying, but they also prevent scalp dryness. Soak 2 tbsp of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning grind the seeds with enough water to get a smooth, consistent paste. Apply this mixture to your hair and leave it for about 45 minutes. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Do this once or twice a week for better results.
