First, let us find out what exactly is lactic acid. Lactic acid is part of the group of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and is a naturally occurring carboxylic acids that's found in many foods. Most dairy products including milk and yogurt are rich in lactic acid content. Lactic acid is also a non-friction type exfoliant which works by breaking down and dissolving the structure of dead skin cells without causing any irritation to sensitive skin.

When applied to the skin, lactic acid stimulates the exfoliation of surface skin cells by interfering with the bonding between these cells. This means dull, rough skin is removed and cellular renewal is promoted. You have younger, plumper skin cells within the skin! Lactic acid is a true multi-tasker as it increases the ceramides in the skin's protective barrier, increases water retention, prevents dead skin cell congestion and improves pigmentation!

Is lactic acid really good for sensitive skin?

Lactic acids are one of the gentler AHAs. If you find skin care products with about 10% or less and  an optimal pH of around 3.5-4.0, you should immediately make it a part of your skin care routine. Lactic acids are a good all-rounder when it comes to use by specific skin types - the acid is a miracle worker for more mature skin, acne prone skin or sensitive skin types. Lactic acid also helps stimulate collagen synthesis, improves skin texture, the appearance of wrinkles and improves skin discolouration by reducing hyperpigmentation. Unlike other acids, lactic acid works efficiently on almost all skin types!

 

 

In which skin care products can I find lactic acid?

1. Cleansers- Lactic acid cleansers are easy to incorporate into your skincare routine. Use them just as you would a regular cleanser. Avoid the sensitive eye area

2. Creams, lotions and serums- These work best if you want a leave-on lactic acid treatment. Apply these at night to avoid any harmful reaction with sunlight.

3. Peels and masks- Peels and masks may have a lactic acid concentration of up to 30%. Extra strong peels may irritate the skin and result in inflammation and redness. Do not use them more than twice a week. 

What are the possible drawbacks of of lactic acid?

1. Lactic acid makes your skin very sun sensitive. Make sure to apply SPF 30 or more every time you apply lactic acid and step out in the sun.

2. You may also experience rashes, burning, peeling and redness if the concentration of lactic acid in your skin care product is too dense.

3. If you have very dry skin, avoid lactic acid as it may lead to dryness and itching.
