None of us are perfect, we all have some or the other flaws. One of the most common problem faced by many of us are “yellow nails”. This problem is mainly caused due to using nail paints which are of darker shades but a super hack would be to apply a clear base on your nails and then apply a darker shade. Not only this, there are other causes of this problem which are quite severe like lifestyle habits, chronic liver diseases, fungal infections, and excessive smoking.

Here are few ways to get rid of those ugly yellow nails

Use a buffing board to remove the exposed top layer that may be stained

If you’ve just recently realized that your nails are starting to get discoloured, try as a first step to remove some of the top layer of the nail with a buffing board. Make sure not to scrub away too much, as you want your nails to stay as strong as possible. However, this may help to fade the discoloration when it’s not too severe.

Rub your nails with lemon:

Lemon juice or lemon is a great option to rub on to your nails to rid of the yellowing. Slice the lemon into half and use it on each nail for at least 30-60 seconds or use lemon juice with a cotton ball and leave it as it is for 10-30 minutes and then rinse it.

Scrub hydrogen peroxide with the help of toothbrush:

First, create a hydrogen peroxide and water mixture, dip the toothbrush into the mixture, and rub on your nails well. You can always use that same mixture as a soak and dip your nails into the solution for 1 to 10 minutes or just until the discoloration is gone.

Baking soda:

Baking soda has bleaching and exploiting properties which help remove the stain from your nails. Just mix 2 and a half tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in a bowl. Then apply the mixture on your stained nails with cotton swabs. After that, leave it on for 3 to 4 minutes. Finally, rinse your nails with warm water. Repeat this way for 6 to 8 weeks.

Another option you can use to avoid yellow nails is that combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil to form a thick paste. Next, rub this mixture on the nails with a soft toothbrush and wait for about 5 minutes. Finally, rinse off the mixture with lukewarm water. Do this every two weeks.

Apply tea tree oil to your nails:

If nail polish is not one of the cause of this problem then fungal infection can be. I know it’s ‘eww” but it’s true. To try to solve the problem with a home remedy, you can put a drop of tea tree oil onto your nail beds, leave it to settle for a couple of minutes, and then rinse with warm water. To see the best results, you can do this twice daily for a few months until you notice the improvement.

Whitening Toothpaste:

Whitening toothpaste can also help to eliminate the yellow stains from your nails. For a mild case, you may use toothpaste that has a whitening ingredient such as hydrogen peroxide.

Apply the whitening toothpaste on the nails and leave it on for 7 to 10 minutes. After that, scrub the nails gently with a nail brush. Finally, wipe off your nails with cotton balls that are soaked in warm water. Follow the way 2 or 3 times per week for 1 month.

Dissolve denture cleaning tablets in water and soak it up:

Denture cleaning tablets are meant to clean and whiten teeth, you can also use this for your nails. Just dissolve the particular amount of tablets (usually 2 to 4) in water and soak your fingernails in it for about 10 to 15 minutes. Dry your nails and make sure to moisturize them. For best results, repeat the process three times per week for one to two months.

Listerine is also another effective remedy for yellow nails caused due to fungal infections. It has active ingredients such as menthol, methyl salicylate, thymol, and eucalyptol that are rich in antifungal effects.

Firstly, soak the yellow nails in Listerine for 30 minutes. Follow this method daily for 7 days, take a break for 7 days, and then repeat this treatment. This solution can cause the skin around your nails to turn green; however, it will disappear within several days.
