We all know what healthy nails look like but have you ever wondered what unhealthy nails look like? If you have split nails, it could be dryness or the result of vitamin deficiency. Whereas tiny white spots usually mean you're biting your nails or painting them too often. Horizontal grooves could be from stress or high fever. If you have noticed red, swollen skin around nails it could be due to removing or biting cuticle meanwhile spoon-shaped nails could be a sign of iron deficiency or anemia. If you have noticed one or more of these signs about your nails, you should consult a dermatologist! Healthy, well-manicured nails are an integral part of a neat and professional appearance. Believe you not, salons  are often not capable of giving the best advice or treatments. It’s best to follow a hygienic routine and if things still don’t seem to improve, then see a skin specialist.

1. Leave your cuticles alone


The cuticle is the natural barrier to fungus and bacteria which protects your nails. Cutting your cuticles will only worsen the health of your nails. Your cuticles will become red, swollen, and ragged and also result in a nasty infection. It may cause severe damage to the nail bed and leads to permanent nail damage.

2. Moisturise your nail bed and cuticles


If your nails are prone to breakage, chipping, cracking and splitting, it means your nails are dry and dehydrated. Putting oil or moisturiser around the cuticle helps moisturize the entire nail and keeps them in top shape.

3. Consider taking biotin supplements


Research shows that supplements of biotin increased nail thickness and prevented splitting and breaking. People with severe nail problems are often prescribed biotin supplements by their doctors.

4. Stay away from acetone based nail polish removers


If you have brittle nails, stay away from acetone nail polish remover. They strip the nails of their natural moisture, causing them to become brittle and dry.

5. Take care of your toenails too


Toenails are also prone to damage since they spend long hours in  a dark, moist environment. Fungal infections can be kept at bay by getting regular pedicures, cutting the nails regularly and washing your feet properly after a long day outside.
