Congested skin appears dull and rough to touch. There can be a lot of blackheads, whiteheads and clogged pores. Clogged pores are small skin-coloured bumps present under your skin that eventually convert into acne breakouts. Skin congestion is caused by a build-up of dead cells, sweat and sebum in the pores. There are many reasons why this may happen.

One of the most common causes of congested skin is improper skincare. Inadequate cleaning, sleeping with makeup on and using products that contain heavy emollients can make your skin congested. Besides this, silicones and oils present in makeup and skincare products have an important role to play.

Relationship between Diet and Skin Congestion

Skin congestion is more likely to happen when your diet consists of refined carbohydrates, processed food and dairy. These high-glycemic foods increase the release of insulin hormone in your body and contribute to clogged pores. Besides carbohydrates, fried food that is prepared with high processed and refined oils also increases insulin secretion. Healthy fats however have a beneficial effect on your skin.

Skincare do's and don'ts for congested skin

Practice regular exfoliation but keep it gentle. Try to pick an exfoliating toner or serum over physical exfoliation with scrubs. Include AHA, BHA and PHAs in your skin cleansers. Look for ingredients such as salicylic acid, lactic acid and gluconolactone. Retinol is also an amazing ingredient in relieving skin congestion, especially in oily and mature skin type.

Consider double cleansing at night with a foaming cleanser followed by micellar water. Avoid products containing silicones and parabens. Make sure you moisturize daily with a light, water-based moisturizer. Weekly steaming for five to ten minutes followed by gentle buffing with a warm washcloth is also a good idea. But remember not to pick at it or squeeze your blackheads and whiteheads.

Oral supplements such as zinc, vitamin A and kiwi seed extract have a proven role in skin health and help in relieving skin congestion.

Chemical peels help congested skin

Professional strength skin peeling treatment can treat skin congestion as well as prevent it. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid and mandelic acid are used to break down the debris congesting the pores. These sessions are done once in 10-15 days and you can expect visible results as early as your first session.
