Burberry announces the launch of a new diversity council after the "noose hoodie" incident

The luxury brand got called out for a design recently and is trying to make amends for the same.

Luxury brand Burberry recently received a lot of flak for making a model walk the ramp with a hoodie that had a noose attached to it. A model who walked the ramp for the fashion house was the first to bring it to notice and even posted about it on her Instagram page. Soon after the social media was all rattled up about it, the brand issued an apology and removed the offensive designs from their collection. They then also took to Instagram to share their new company programs to prevent future issues. 

In a statement they posted on Instagram, the brand talked about how determined they were to learn from this mistake and have since then also developed a plan to increase consciousness and broaden their understanding of social issues. They also intend to fully embrace diversity and inclusion, as per Marco Gobbetti, CEO of the Burberry group. Riccardo Tisci, the Creative Director also took to his Instagram to apologise for the designs. "I am deeply sorry to anyone whose feelings I unintentionally have hurt. I am a man of my principles and I take my responsibilities seriously. I am committed to learn from this so that this never happens again," he wrote. 


These steps include: 1. Increasing our understanding We will strengthen our understanding of and sensitivity to a range of perspectives to help us live the values we hold and be truly inclusive. We will: . • Introduce additional training for all employees, including senior management • Establish employee councils focused on diversity and inclusion • Assemble an advisory board of external experts 2. Diversifying the pipeline of talent We will evolve our pipeline of talent to ensure we better reflect the world we live in and build a more diverse talent base for the future. We will: . • Strengthen goals to ensure diverse representation in our employee base • Expand our creative arts scholarship internationally to support students from diverse backgrounds and provide full-time employment for 50 graduates from the programme over the next five years • Extend internationally Burberry Inspire, our in-school arts and culture programme designed to help young people overcome challenging circumstances and see future opportunity in the creative industries 3. Championing those who help others We will add to our support of organisations promoting diversity and inclusion and providing assistance to people in crisis, including the Samaritans, who offer a safe, confidential place to which people can turn

Burberry is launching three new initiatives which hope to increase understanding and sensitivity to a range of perspectives to be inclusive. For this, the brand is all set to introduce additional training for all employees and senior management, establish employee councils who focus on inclusion and also assemble a board of experts for the same. They have a threefold idea that they plan on executing to be more supportive and inclusive of all cultures.
