Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and more welcome The Year of the Pig

Luxury brands across the world have launched pig-themed products to celebrate the Chinese New Year. These new launches have been greeted with varying levels of success.

The Lunar New Year has just begun and according to the Chinese, who are major consumers in the luxury market space, it is the year of the pig. Luxury brands like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Estee Lauder, Gucci and even Dolce and Gabbana have launched new products with pig motifs or symbols, targeting the Chinese client base. 

The new products have been greeted with varying levels of success. Dolce and Gabbana were recently under fire for insulting the Chinese. Steffano Gabbana, one half of the duo apparently called the Chinese "ignorant dirty smelling mafia". With the launch of new products like tees and bomber jackets for men that feature cartoon pigs, critics have accused the designers of making money off the people they once insulted. 

Italian brand Bulgari also rolled out accessories targeting the Year of the Pig. The brand launched flower shaped necklaces with diamonds in rose gold, and a couple of other limited edition objects. This range though received mixed reactions since the brand used a mix of Chinese and English characters to promote the products that could also be read as an insult to Jewish people!

The Paris luxury retail company Louis Vuitton went all out for their version of products for the Chinese New Year. The brand launched cute pig themed accessories, keychains, bracelets and necklaces and even a pig change jar aka a piggy bank!

Gucci used the 'Three Little Pigs' cartoon as inspiration for their products which included wallets and sweaters. They took things a notch higher by even using real pigs in their advertising campaigns! 

The luxury beauty brand Estee Lauder also became a part of the bandwagon by launching a powder compact in the shape of a pig! This piece too is limited edition and available with embellished pink stones and gold motifs.
