Jaipur-based designer Punit Balana is on top of his game with prime celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, among a whole lot of other ruling ladies of Bollywood. He has been flaunting his wonderful creations from time to time. Punit Balana shares about his source of  inspiration to dressing the leading ladies of the B-town in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your designs?

PB: Most of my designs are inspired and based on the local art and techniques of Jaipur. A common point in all my collections are the hand block prints, which is a technique I simply love. Having learned the whole printing process for a period of two to three years, I have a very good knowledge about the technique and the process.

While incorporating the hand block printing in my creations, organic colours are used over the artificial dyes. Also, the fabrics I use are pure and organic. Apart from all that, being a designer hailing from Rajasthan, the city of Jaipur and its craftsmanship inspires me immensely.

You have worked with most of the beautiful actresses of B-town, how do you go about while working with each one of them?

PB: One thing we make sure is when we receive a request for an outfit for a particular actress is that the garment is apt for that particular individual and it matches her personality. This is something I personally look into every single time. Because at the end of the day, it is my product and I want it to be in the right hands.

Vidya Balan: I absolutely adore Vidya. She carries my garments with such elegance and I really love that about her. Personally, I love her in Punit Balana sarees.

Can you name a celebrity look you’ve loved in your designs?

PB: I love how Shilpa Shetty carries off my garments. A couple of months back, she was spotted donning the Ajrak saree from my collection, styled by Mohit Rai and that look has become my all-time favourite now.

According to you, which celebrity has their fashion game on point?

PB: Kareena Kapoor! She can never go wrong and whatever she sports is an absolute fashion statement. I love her fashion choices and the way she effortlessly pulls off every outfit looking beautiful yet comfortable. So according to me, Kareena is on top of the fashion game right now.

Commercial appeal or creative force, which one is important?

PB: If you don’t possess a commercial appeal for your product, you will not be able to sustain in the fashion industry for a longer period. The product you make must sell in order for you to survive in such a competitive industry. Thus, creating a wearable yet creative product is essential.

Among the younger lot of talents in Bollywood, who do you think is an absolute trend setter?

PB: I really like Tara Sutaria’s fashion sense and style a lot. She has the ability to carry any style well.

One international celebrity who you would love to work with or see in your creation?

PB: Honestly, I am more than happy with the Indian celebrities. I am glad seeing them in my creations and will continue to do so.

When you showcase a collection, what do you think is more important? Theatrics of a garment or its wear ability?

PB: A balance of both are really important. Wearability is one thing I keep in mind while creating every single garment. When they are on the runway, they give out the right vibes, looking fab and fun, but at the end of the day, each and every silhouette  from label Punit Balana is wearable.

Could you describe your personal style?

PB: Being comfortable in what I wear is my personal mantra. But I do like to experiment with my personal wardrobe and styles from time to time. Also, what I like to wear depends upon where I am headed to. I love the classic combination of a pair of denims and a white cufflink shirt or even a jumpsuit for a fancy event.

What are those three must-haves every Indian woman should have in her wardrobe?

PB: A pair of well-fitted blue denims, black dress and of course saree.
