When it comes to consuming yogurt or curd, we often get confused between the two. For the longest time, all of us used to think that yogurt and curd are similar but sorry to disappoint you, they are not. We used to think that curd is the Indian name for dahi, while Yogurt is the American name. But the truth is that yogurt and curd are majorly different, and both have different utilities too. Yogurt and curd are two different types of dairy products. Curd is used in raita, chat and some curries, whereas, Yogurt is usually used as a breakfast and snack option. Sometimes people also cosnume it as a dessert.

Yogurt is consumed with cereals, oats, fruits, and nuts, and being rich in probiotics it's consumed as a snack item too. When it comes to curd, it is consumed with dal chawal sabji roti, and also when you have an upset stomach. It's not as creamy and tasty like yogurt but is equally delicious and healthy.

Major difference between Curd and Yogurt:

Curd:

1. Curd is made by boiling and cooling the milk and adding a spoonful of curd. It is packed with lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria multiplies itself in the ambient temperature and a few hours ferments the milk to form the curd.

2. Curds are made by curdling or coagulating the milk.

3. A medium-sized bowl of curd contains roughly 3-4 grams of protein.

Yogurt:

1. On the other end, yogurt is prepared with the same technique but the fermentation of the milk is done by adding specific strains of bacteria called streptococcus thermophilus. The addition of these bacteria makes the product standardised and homogenous.

2. A medium-sized bowl of Greek yogurt has almost double the amount, roughly 8-10 grams.

3. Yogurt can make the workout less tiring by reducing muscular stress.

Health benefits of Yogurt:

Yogurt is a lot thicker and creamier than curd. It's rich in protein and has less carb content. It helps you stay full for longer and is easier for lactose-intolerant people to digest. It is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin-vitamin B2, iodine, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid-vitamin B5, zinc and potassium. The bacteria present in yogurt helps boost the immune system. And the consumption of low-fat yogurt can aid in weight loss.

Health benefits of curd:

Curd has more carbs and is high in sodium content. Curd is nutritious and also contains a decent amount of vitamins A, E and K; thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B12. It also contains calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper, manganese, fluoride and selenium, as well as saturated fats. It further also has a healthy content of probiotics.

Uses of yogurt:

Yogurt is usually consumed in breakfast with fruits and cornflakes. But it can also be eaten as a snack option by adding some additional flavours to it. It is also used as a replacement for heavy cream in many recipes.

Uses of curd:

Curd is usually eaten with Indian food items, and can be used in several Indian dishes like dahi vada, dahi chaat and raita, to name a few. It is most often used in desserts or served in sandwiches or salads. There's no major difference between the two. But in terms of usage and health value, they are slightly different from each other.
