Fennel seeds and cumin seeds are two popular spices and are an inseparable part of every Indian kitchen. Both of them are highly flavoured spices and they look quite similar to each other. But their taste and usages in cooking are different. So, before using any of them in your preparations, it is better to know their differences.

1.Fennel seeds belong to the Foeniculum vulgare plant but cumin seeds are from the Cuminum cyminum plant. Both of them belong to the Apiaceae family which makes them related to each other. But there are many differences between them.

2.Fennel seeds have a sweet flavour with strong anise seed and Licorice notes. On the other hand, cumin seeds offer a smoky and earthy note with a slight bitterness. But both of them are equally flavourful and aromatic.

3.Both the seeds have a lot of similarities in shape. But there are differences in their size and colour. Fennel seeds have a greenish colour and cumin are of brown shade. And fennel seeds are slightly larger than cumin seeds.

Can fennel seeds be a substitute for cumin in recipes?

Fennel seeds can be used in recipes as a substitute for cumin if only the recipe requires cumin. It generally blends with the flavour properly and doesn’t make any odd taste. And fennel can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes.

But on the other hand, cumin seeds are mostly limited to savoury recipes. It can be used in recipes as a substitute that require fennel seeds, but it completely changes the taste and turns it into a different preparation.

Usage of fennel seeds and cumin seeds

Fennel seeds can be used for making tea or for rubbing on pork. And cumin seeds should be used for giving flavour to meat and other spicy preparations. It is also an important ingredient for home-made curry powder.
