Addicted to your smartphone before bedtime? Not only does it affect your eye power but also deteriorates your health. Sending out strict guidelines on cutting screen time, Britain’s Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health recommended time limits and a curfew but said that parents need not worry that using the devices is harmful in itself.

Why it is important to turn TVs, phones and tablets at least an hour before bedtime? The light rays from the screen delay your body’s natural release of melatonin, which is responsible to send the sleep signals to your body. Moreover, it also leads to stress and tiredness.

Another study by The University of Auckland in New Zealand suggests that increased screen time interferes with the natural wind-down process. Looking for ways to go for a family digital detox? Try these tips to limit your screen time.

1.      Make it a habit to play a cards game with your family before bed.

2.    Tell bedtime stories to your children or inspiring tales from your childhood.

3.    Instead of watching movies or binging on videos, try reading a book under lamplight for 20 minutes.

4.    Play instrumental music on your stereo set and meditate for a few minutes as you lie down on your bed.

5.     Play an instrument or write down about your day in a journal before going to sleep.

Incorporate these tiny changes to your schedule and see how it promotes good health and improves your well-being. Moreover, who can forget the golden words: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!”
