Losing weight doesn't come easy. And those who want to lose weight have tried and tested everything possible from gymming and cutting back on calories, to keto and cheese diets.
The latest slimming trick on the block though is the intermittent fast diet. A lot of celebrities swear to it from Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman to Jennifer Lopez and Miranda Kerr are known for religiously following this diet. Back home, Rhea Kapoor and celebrity chef Pooja Dhingra also follows it religiously. So what's all the buzz about? Let's find out!
This is not a diet in the conventional sense. It's more of an eating pattern since it doesn't really specify which foods you can eat but when you should eat it. You can practice variations of this fast. You can fast for 16 hours or 24 hours, depending on your capacity, twice every week. Once you get used to it, you can increase it to thrice, but it is not advisable to go above that!
There are three most popular methods of this fast:
The 5:2 diet: You follow this twice a week on two non-consecutive days. During the day, you consume not more than 500 calories but continue to eat regularly on the other 5 days.
The 16/8 diet:  This method involves restricting your food consumption to a maximum of 8 hours and fasting for 16 hours in between. So, if you have your first meal at 8 am, you cannot eat anything past 4 pm.
The fast: This method involves fasting for the whole 24 hours, twice a week, once or twice a week.
But what happens when you skip meals?
As opposed to beliefs, fasting is not unnatural. In the ancient times, humans went days without eating and still managed to remain as healthy as ever! Fasting is also a common religious belief and people following all religions do it from time-to-time.
When you skip a meal, several changes take place in your body. Your body starts adjusting its hormones and begins using the stored fats more accessible for the body by making the insulin drop dramatically. It also helps improve insulin sensitivity.
The growth hormone in your body also skyrockets, which increases the process of fat loss and muscle gain. Your cells also repair quickly, dysfunctional protein build-up reduces and the cells digest easily.
Your metabolism also increases by 5-14%.
Results of this fast have so far been positive since the number of calories taken in is less. In the beginning, you do feel hungry, but once your body adjusts to this pattern, it becomes easier. People who have tried and tested this method have claimed that following it led to the reduction in belly fat and fat in the face.
The only people advised to not follow this are people with diabetes and blood sugar problems and those who have a history with eating disorders.
Since we have tried practically everything else, might as well give this diet a try too! What say?
