Raisins and sultanas are both types of dried fruit that are used and consumed in similar form. Yet there are several things that set raisins and sultanas apart from each other. Raisins and sultanas are both sweet dried fruits that are obtained from different varieties of vine-grown grapes. While different in colour and slightly different in sweetness and size, raisins and sultanas are actually quite similar.

Since they’re used in many of the same ways, they are often easily substituted for one another. Sultanas and raisins are also easily available in the market and not as expensive as other dried fruits!

Raisins are dried grapes, specifically dried white-fleshed grapes. These grapes are initially green in skin colour and darken as they dry. Finally, they become a dense, dark-coloured dried fruit containing small seeds and bursting with a sweet flavour.

Raisins are commonly produced in the U.S., Turkey, Greece, and Australia. Raisins are usually eaten out of hand. They are also mixed into foods like oatmeal, granola bars, and chutneys. No cakes, pies, and other baked goods are complete without a generous sprinkle of raisins. They are also often soaked in alcohol or other flavourful liquids before being used in baked goods, since raisins can easily absorb liquid.

More about sultanas

Sultanas are also known as golden raisins. They are golden coloured dried grapes that are made from various varieties of seedless white-fleshed grapes. The skin of these fruits start off as pale yellow in colour, but unlike raisins, don’t darken in the same way as they dry.

Compared to raisins, sultanas also easily absorb liquid. But, sultanas are smaller and slightly sweeter. Sultanas are used in the same way one would use raisins. They are added to dishes where the bright colour really stands out gives the dish a gorgeous appearance. Use them in a fresh broccoli raisin salad or in an elegant fruit compote with brie.
