Cancer is on the rise globally. Pollution, stress, unhealthy lifestyle and many other factors contribute to this deadly disease. While some people detect cancer on stage 1, others come to know about it when it starts spreading in other parts of the body. Chemotherapy, radiation and medication are some of the treatments that every cancer patient has to go through. When it comes to cancer, the most common type of cancer in men is lung and prostate cancer, contributing to 15.5% of new cases in 2018, whereas breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer deaths in women. As per research, every 1 in 8 women gets diagnosed with breast cancer.

In India, cancer is still not talked about and many people in rural villages don't have access to information about cancer and its treatment and due to this several deaths take place every year because of this deadly disease.

According to the latest report released by the National Health Profile, in 2019, cases of common cancer, including oral, cervical and breast cancer, diagnosed at state-run NCD clinics have increased by nearly 324% between 2017 and 2018. Not only this, but the number of people visiting the NCD clinics has doubled between 2017 and 2018, from 3.5 crores to 6.6 crores. Health professionals suggest that lifestyle plays a key role in the rise of cancer.

When it comes to state wise, Gujarat recorded the most number of cases in 2018, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and West Bengal. Most of these states also recorded a significant jump in cases in comparison to last year.

What causes this common type of cancer?

Health professionals have pointed out that consumption of tobacco, when mixed with alcohol, increases the risk of oral cancer. Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, stress and other lifestyle choices also contribute to this deadly disease.

If you feel something is off with your body, then you must consult a doctor immediately, since early detection of cancer can help to cure it before it spreads in other parts of the body. Taking medication on time, informing people in rural areas can also help to treat the diseases.

For breast cancer, the world health organisation recommends that women over the age of 40 should get a mammography screening done. Since timely mammography has shown to reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 20% in recent years.

Things to keep in mind:

Cancer can happen to anyone. Hence, it is imperative to maintain a healthy lifestyle, reduce or avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco, and exercise regularly. Talk to people about cancer, so that everyone around you knows what needs to be done when they feel something is wrong with their body.
