In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Dr. Karishma Jaradi, Aesthetic Dentist- Dentzz Dental spoke in length on the importance of good oral health and whether flossing of teeth helps or not?

Dr. Jaradi said, "Upholding good oral care is of prime importance. Maintaining healthy dental hygiene can facilitate in preventing bad breath, tooth deterioration and gum ailment—and most importantly can aid in up keeping your teeth healthy as you get older. Healthy teeth beget a charming smile, moreover, a sparkling white smile will boost your overall persona. In order to maintain that healthy smile, throughout your life, it’s significant to follow good dental habits early on in life. Going by the popular adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene to help tackle dental problems like tooth decays, root canal, cavity build-up and other such discomforts."

Talking on the importance of flossing she said, "Although a good toothbrush and toothpaste help in cleansing your teeth, it’s almost impossible for a brush to clean the spaces in between your tooth, thus failing to destroy the plaque formation and bacteria. It’s always advisable to floss after brushing since not all germs and bacteria vanish with brushing. Dental flossing fights the tartar built-up, thus leaving you with a bacteria-free tooth. By flossing, you can reach out to the nooks and crannies of the teeth which need to be kept hygienic like the rest of your mouth to maintain good oral hygiene."

She added, "Irregular flossing causes the breeding of bacteria in the area’s underneath gums and teeth which eventually leads to plaque development. Along with flossing you also need to rinse your mouth after regular intervals of food. Rinsing with a good mouth wash will help keep tooth decay away."

Speaking of dental floss, the use of it dates back as far as prehistoric times and it was first recommended in print by a dentist named Dr. Levi Spear Parmly, in his book, "A Practical Guide to the Management of the Teeth,” in 1819. While flossing one should consider the force and tough spots as the same can lead to gum bleeding. Post flossing it is vital to rinse the mouth. So, in order to have a healthy smile do brushing as well as flossing.
