Diabetes is a deadly disease that can happen to anyone at any age. It is also a disease that affects millions of people globally. Diabetes, which is also known as Diabetes Mellitus, is divided into two types - type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is more common in children while type 2 is more common in adults and teens. But there's another type of diabetes which is very uncommon and rare. It is known as Diabetes insipidus. It is a condition that causes your body to produce a lot of urine that is colourless and odourless. People with diabetes insipidus can pass urine between 3 and 20 times a day.

It is known as a rare condition because as per reports, only one in 25,000 people get this type of diabetes. When it comes to diabetes insipidus, the hormones that help your body balance liquids don’t work in this type of diabetes. Read below to find out signs and symptoms about this type of diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes insipidus:

Our body produces a substance known as vasopressin. This substance is made in a part of our brain called the hypothalamus and is stored in our pituitary gland. The function of this substance is to tell our kidneys to hold on to water, which helps to make our urine more concentrated. So when you're dehydrated, vasopressin levels rise. Your kidneys reabsorb more water and put out concentrated urine. If you’ve had plenty to drink, vasopressin levels fall and what comes out is clear and diluted. When our body doesn’t make enough vasopressin, the condition is called central diabetes insipidus. If we drink enough water but our kidneys can't respond to it, then that's known as nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Our kidneys can't retain water, so even if we're dehydrated, they'll put out a lot of pale urine.

Symptoms of diabetes insipidus:

Extreme thirst, preference for cold drinks, dehydration, muscle pains, irritability, unexplained weakness and peeing a lot are the symptoms of this type of diabetes.

Diagnosis of diabetes insipidus:

If you have this rare type of diabetes, then you’ll probably wind up at the doctor for help with your thirst and constant need for a bathroom. The doctor will ask you some questions and will suggest some tests. Urinalysis, blood test, fluid deprivation test and genetic screenings are some type of tests that will be done to come to a conclusion.
