We all know that unfortunately, fertility waits for no one. As per studies, women are 10 percent less fertile at 27 and the number of a woman’s eggs declines drastically as women grow old. The biological clock is always ticking for women and that's why many women who want to focus on career or something else panic and prepone their motherhood. However, thanks to science, females who are not planning for pregnancy early on and want to maximize their chances of conceiving later in the future can go for egg freezing or ocyte cryopreservation process. Many celebs such as Sofia Vergara, Celine Dion, Olivia Munn, Diana Hayden had resorted to egg freezing technique. Many commoners too have tried the same to conceive later, for example, in their 40s.

You don't require any male partner

For the unversed, for Egg freezing, you don't require any male partner or even a sperm donor. In this method, the unfertilized eggs of the woman are harvested from the ovaries, and are frozen and stored to be used later. If you too want to know in detail about the process, then read on.

In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Dr. Rajalaxmi Walavalkar, Medical Director, IVF Specialist & Senior Gynecologist at Cocoon Fertility spoke about the same in length.

Egg freezing is a boon

Dr. Walavalkar said, "Egg freezing comes as a boon for empowered informed women of today, who wish to have the best of both worlds and want to embrace motherhood in later years. For today’s generation wanting to preserve their fertility for either various personal reasons or due to certain medical reasons, egg freezing remains a preferred choice. In addition to embryo freezing, this offers a great option for those wanting to preserve fertility, especially single women. With scientific and technological advancements in the health care sector having a child in later years is becoming a reality for many."

How it works

She added, "The egg freezing technology is a process in which a woman’s eggs which are scientifically called (oocytes) are collected and are frozen and stored as a method to preserve their fertility. The steps in egg freezing include the initial consultation and blood tests for hormone levels and an ultrasound scan to assess ovarian reserve. Next comes the step of stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple follicles that contain eggs. This is done by giving hormone injections. At an average of 9 to 11 days of injections are needed until the follicles are matured and grown to a good size for the collection of eggs. "

"The egg collection is a minor day care procedure done under short general anesthesia. The fluid collected from the ovaries is screened for eggs which are then frozen at -196 degrees Celsius in liquid nitrogen containers. This method of freezing is called vitrification or ultra-rapid cooling. It is a safe way of freezing eggs. Once frozen the eggs can be kept frozen forever."

The technique of egg freezing has advanced

Dr. Walavalkar stated, "The technique of egg freezing has advanced over the last decade leading to better egg survival rates, fertilization and live birth rates when these eggs are thawed and used for creating an embryo. For creating an embryo from thawed eggs, the ICSI process in IVF is utilized where a single sperm is injected into an egg to fertilize it and later the embryo that forms is transferred into the uterus."
