Green tea vs black tea: Know which one is healthier for you

Tea is a staple in every household and is loved by everyone. There are many teas that are beneficial for health, including green tea and black tea. Both black and green tea are made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. 


Both types of teas have some shared health benefits.  Both black tea and green tea consist of powerful compounds that offer a variety of health benefits. They both help to keep your immune system healthy, aid in weight loss and help in maintaining cardiovascular health. Here are some differences between the two types of tea. 


Green tea

When it comes to production, the leaves of green tea are not oxidised and are harvested from the tea plant and heated to prevent oxidation. 

In terms of the amount of caffeine present in green tea, it contains 1/4th amount of caffeine present in coffee, which makes it a healthier alternative.

It also aids in weight loss. The caffeine and catechins present in this tea boost metabolism and can help the body to burn fat quickly and efficiently. 

To brew the green tea perfectly, take 220 ml of water and bring it to 100 degree celsius.  Add 2 grams of green tea leaves. Let it brew for 2-3 minutes and strain. 

Black tea

Black tea is produced by rolling the leaves and exposing them to air to begin the oxidisation process. The leaves of black tea are harvested and withered to reduce moisture content. 

Black tea has higher levels of caffeine as compared to green tea. It contains 1/3rd the amount of caffeine present in coffee. 


Since it contains a high amount of caffeine, it is effective in increasing the blood flow and in improving concentration and focus. 

To brew black tea, take 220 ml of water and bring to 100 degree celsius. Add 2 grams of black tea leaves and let it brew for 3-4 minutes. Strain the leaves and serve. 


Both green tea and black tea have several health benefits. But since the leaves of green tea are not oxidised, it has more antioxidants as compared to black tea. So based on this,  it can be said that green tea is healthier than black tea.
