High blood pressure aka hypertension is one of the most googled health subjects as many people across the world suffer from the same. For the unversed, the force of blood against the blood vessels are constantly high and abnormal if you have this health condition. Over time, hypertension can lead to life-threatening health risks such as heart, eye, brain and kidney-related health issues.

However, simple lifestyle changes help you to bring the BP levels down. Reducing salt intake, including veggies and fruits and exercising are some of the best defenses against high BP. And now, we have learned that as per scientists, exercises' effect on blood pressure gets negatively affected for the people who rinse their mouths with mouthwash.

Lead author Dr. Raul Bescos, Lecturer in Dietetics and Physiology at the University of Plymouth, said that scientists know that blood vessel open up during exercise as nitric oxide widens the diameter of the blood vessels thus boosting the blood flow circulation to active muscles.

He added, "What has remained a mystery is how blood circulation remains higher after exercise, in turn triggering a blood-pressure-lowering response known as post-exercise hypotension. Previous research has suggested that nitric oxide was not involved in this post-exercise response - and only involved during exercise - but the new study challenges these views.”

They found that nitric oxide degrading into nitrate is the main element. Over the years, scientists thought nitrate do not impact the body. But now many types of research have shown how nitrate can be absorbed in our salivary glands and getaway also from them as well. And the same helped in vasodilation post-exercise as well. And the researchers wanted to see whether blocking the conversion (by removing bacteria) can lower hypotension or no.

As per the study, they found that participants who rinsed their mouth with the placebo after a workout showed the average reduction in systolic blood pressure by -5.2 mmHg. However, when participants rinsed with the antibacterial mouthwash, they showed an average systolic blood pressure of -2.0 mmHg.

The researchers concluded that lowering the effect of exercising reduced by 60% over the first-hour post-workout and vanished totally later for those who rinsed their mouth with antibacterial mouth wash.
