High blood pressure aka hypertension is one of the common ailments and many people across the world suffer from the same. Hypertension is also dubbed as 'the silent killer' as the symptoms are quite easily missable. The disorder affects approximately one in three adults in India. Aside from medications, simple lifestyle changes can help you to bring the BP levels to normal. Lowering the intake of salt, indulging in physical activity, eating foods rich in fiber, calcium, and potassium, skipping alcohol and smoking are some of the lifestyle changes one should bring about to lower BP.

Speaking of a nutrient-dense diet, one of the superfoods which hypertension patients should incorporate in the diet is blueberry. Blueberry has several health benefits including lowering blood pressure. The antioxidant content in the fruits helps overall health including healthy ageing and memory. 

For the unversed, Blueberries, as compared to other fruits, have the highest quantity of antioxidants and phytochemicals. As per the studies which were published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, they deduced that eating a cup of blueberries a day can reduce systolic blood pressure- the top number in blood pressure.

The studies also revealed that a cup of berries can improve the functioning of blood pressure. For the unversed, high blood pressure is when the pressure of blood against the walls of arteries are higher than normal. If left untreated, the blood vessels can get damaged and can lead to heart attack and stroke. Phytochemicals and anthocyanins are the reasons why it helps to improve blood vessels.

Lead researcher Dr. Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, Department of Nutritional Sciences at King's College London said, "Although it is best to eat the whole blueberry to get the full benefit, our study finds that the majority of the effects can be explained by anthocyanins."

She added, "If the changes we saw in blood vessel function after eating blueberries every day could be sustained for a person's whole life, it could reduce their risk of developing the cardiovascular disease by up to 20%."

Other ways to reduce hypertension
Maintain a healthy weight, taking less stress and sleeping are some of the other easy ways to curb and prevent hypertension.
