We have all been attacked by sinusitis at least once in our lives. For a lot of us, it’s a recurring issue that is brought on by changes in weather, allergic reactions etc. We suffer from sinusitis when too much mucus builds up in the cavities behind our face which results in one or more of these cavities to become swollen or inflamed. Those of us who are prone to allergies or have asthma, sinusitis is a regular occurence. This also leads to constant pressure around the nose, a bad-tasting postnasal drip, headache, exhaustion, and other symptoms. 

Irrespective of whether you are prone to single sinus infection or recurrent sinusitis, the pain and pressure in the face tempts us to seek out medication right away. But you should be wary of taking unnecessary antibiotics. Since most sinus problems are caused by viruses, antibiotics are incapable of treating them. Instead you could try some home remedies to get immediate relief from your discomfort.

1. Steam your face

Steam treatment is one of the most potent ways to get relief from sinus. Boil a pot of water, tent a towel over your head and bend over the pot to inhale the steam. Make sure that the steam isn’t too hot and keep your eyes closed at all times. You could also add a drop or two of eucalyptus or chamomile essential oils to clear up the nasal passage.


2. Yoga helps, too

If you are annoyed by the pain caused by your sinus infection, yoga can help you experience some relief. A supported yoga pose where your head is elevated will help you feel better and it won’t put any pressure on your sinuses!


3. Drink lots of fluids

It is important to stay hydrated during a sinus infection. Drink fluids regularly as it will moisten your sinuses, decrease the thickness of sinus mucus so it flows out more easily. Stay away from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks as they can cause dehydration.


4. Have chicken soup

The benefits of chicken soup is not just an old wives’ tale! Chicken soup is rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help clear the sinuses.


5. Irrigate your nasals

Irrigating the nasals gives relief from nasal congestion and irritation. Nasal irrigation is done by gently flushing out the nasal passages with a saline solution. Make sure to use distilled water so that there’s no risk of getting an infection.
