Unfortunately all of us are familiar with what a sore throat feels like. We all know that a sore throat is a painful, dry, or scratchy feeling in the throat. Pain in the throat is one of the most common symptoms. Did you know that almost 13 million people visit their doctor each year to get a sore throat treated? Most sore throats are caused by infections, or by environmental factors like dry air. Although a sore throat can be uncomfortable, it usually tends to go away on its own.

Sore throat is divided into three types based on the area it affects - laryngitis, tonsilitis and pharyngitis. Apart from weather changes, cold and flu or bacterial infections, sore throats could also be a result of an allergy, injury or chemical irritants. Symptoms of a sore throat:

1. Pain or a scratchy sensation in the throat

2. Pain is heightened during swallowing or talking

3. Difficulty swallowing

4. Sore, swollen glands in your neck or jaw

5. Swollen, red tonsils

6. White patches or pus on your tonsils

7. A hoarse or muffled voice

A sore throat might also be accompanied with a fever, body aches, runny nose, nausea, headache and sneezing.

Home remedies to treat sore throat:

1. Gargle often with warm water and one spoon of salt.

2. Drink warm liquids that feel soothing to the throat. Beverages such as hot tea with honey, soup broth, or warm water with lemon with soothe your sore throat.

3. Suck on a piece of medicated lozenge to curb cough and provide relief to your sore throat.

4. You might want to turn on the humidifier to add some moisture to the air around you.

5. Get plenty of sleep so that your body gets enough rest to heal on its own

When do I need to seek medical treatment?

You should consult a doctor when you experience:

1. Trouble swallowing or breathing

2. Sore joints

3. A high fever that refuses to subside

4. Blood in your phlegm

5. Earache or pain in your neck
