When we speak about weight loss, and following a healthy diet, it doesn't only imply to adults, but it also implies to children. Children these days play more of indoor games and less of outdoor games. With the competition to come first and the sedentary lifestyle that they follow makes them gain weight. Research also suggests that obesity in children is on the rise.  The study also found that increased rates of overweight and obesity have led to more and more children being diagnosed with previously grown-up, obesity-related conditions such as high cholesterol and Type II diabetes.

If you think that your child has gained some extra kgs in a year or is unfit according to you, then you must not take that lightly. You must motivate your child to lose weight or at least maintain the weight. Read below to find out some steps that can help you do that.

Here are 5 ways to help your child lose weight-

1. Set realistic goals for them

Children should eat and play and enjoy their childhood, but with the diseases that are on the rise in children, they should watch their weight loss. Since they are still growing, you should help them maintain the weight.

If your child is slightly overweight, then one kg per week is a good goal. The more attainable the goal, the more likely it is your child can live with these lifetime modifications.

2. Encourage them to exercise

You cannot expect that your child will wake up every morning and hit the gym like a pro. No that won't happen. Instead, you should make it a point to encourage your child to exercise daily.

Dancing, playing a sport, cycling or running are all great ways to burn calories. You should also encourage your child to stay active in other ways, like using the stairs instead of the elevator.

3. Change your family's eating habits

This is very important. You should encourage your child to eat only when he/she is hungry and not just because they are bored.

Serve family meals in the dining room without any other distractions like the television.

4. Try behaviour modification techniques

Try and motivate your child by using a reward system. For example, if your child drinks water instead of soda for a week, reward her with a favourite toy or another gifting item. Do not reward your child with food.

5. Be supportive

You should support your child no matter what. Make sure that you don't keep a lot of junk foods in the house. Make healthy meals for everyone in your home.

Children should eat and play and enjoy their childhood, but with the diseases that are on the rise in children, they should watch their weight loss. Since they are still growing, you should help them maintain the weight.
