November 14 marks World Diabetes Day. The day was started to create awareness regarding health disorder. On the occasion of WDD, today we are talking about myths associated with Diabetes. Before we begin, read on to know what is diabetes and its types. So, speaking of Diabetes, the same happens when there is too much sugar in the blood. There are three kinds of diseases: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys cells in your pancreas that make insulin. And type 1 diabetes patients need insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the more common form of diabetes and the same is the result of poor lifestyle and being overweight. Weight loss and a healthy lifestyle can help to curb type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes mostly developed in pregnant women and usually it goes after childbirth. However, women with gestational diabetes are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

1. Myths- Diabetic cannot eat fruits as it contains sugar

Fact- Diabetics can eat fruits keeping in mind the glycemic index and quantities. Fruits contain natural sugar fructose and contain soluble fiber which helps the slow release of sugar and prevents hyper/ hypoglycemia. Diabetics should eat high glycemic index fruits in moderation as it will spike their blood sugar levels.

2. Myth - Eating sugar causes diabetes

Fact - Diabetes is a genetic and lifestyle disease. A diet with excessive sugar, over-processed foods and an unhealthy lifestyle can increase the risk of getting diabetes but is not the only reason that causes diabetes.

3. Myth - Herbs, cinnamon, bitter foods, detox drinks, foods etc. can cure diabetes

Fact- Herbs and bitter foods can help improve insulin sensitivity and control the blood sugar levels but no magic potion can cure one of diabetes completely. In the case of Type 2 Diabetes, if detected at an early stage, one can remit it by adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle

He also helped us with the nutrients one should include in diet that will help us to fight diabetes. He said,"Although no research supports specific nutrients that fight diabetes. But there are nutrients like isothiocyanate in drumstick leaves or insulin polypeptide –P in the bitter gourd which are beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels. But complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber are two important nutrients that are responsible for controlling the blood sugar levels.

An intake of 30g of dietary fiber is recommended for diabetes. Sweet potatoes, whole fresh fruits, steel-cut oats, millets, vegetables, nuts and seeds among others are some high fiber food that diabetics can eat freely. They can add psyllium husk or other fiber sources to incorporate fiber in their diet as well.
