Polka dots can make a room pop - when used the right way. Though the playful pattern has been largely resigned to children's spaces, grown-up applications can also be super cool and easy to achieve. In fact, contrary to popular belief, there’s nothing inherently childish about polka dots. And yet they’re typically associated with children’s decor, and we see people shying away from using them in more sophisticated spaces.

To be frank, many of us grown-ups could probably stand to inject a little youthful spirit into our homes, and if you're a little uncertain about how to incorporate this cheerful pattern into your home, here are some tips that will help!

1. Elegant fabric

Choose a luxurious fabric for a refined polka-dot look. The other classic pieces in this room, including a crystal chandelier, silk drapes and traditional artwork, allow the velvet-dotted dining chairs to add a contemporary energy without taking away from the sophistication of the room.

2. Bedding

Use polka-dot sheets to highlight a monochromatic comforter or vice-versa. Or, really get wild and have your bed entirely covered in the dots. It’s a fun way to make your bedroom a bit more flirtatious.

3. Toned down dots

Adding just one element of polka is a great way to slyly infuse the pattern into your decor. That way, it will be just one pop element - becoming the highlight, yet not being overpowering.

4. Wallpaper

This idea is particularly for smaller, boxy rooms. Polka dots work brilliantly as wallpaper in an entry hall, dining room or powder room. Any compact room will be transformed with a graphic print on the walls. Polka dots, especially closely spaced patterns, translate almost as textures, much in the same way that a small-scale check and a houndstooth do. They can be a barely there pattern that is both easy to live with and more interesting than a solid wall.

5. Drapes

If you’re still not convinced that polka dots can be pulled off in a subtle, stylish manner, think again! These gauzy floor-to-ceiling curtains feature a barely there polka-dot pattern that adds just a whiff of whimsy to the traditional decor.

Polka dots are a fun way to experiment with your home decor and lighten up the vibe. Also, they're ideal for summer and are more versatile than you think! Incorporate this pattern in your decor and watch your space transform, beautifully!
