“Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something: they’re trying to find someone who’s going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take,” American author Anthony Robbins once said.

These words resonate with most youngsters’ yearning for love. Who doesn’t want a partner to share their joys and sorrows with? But if one so focused on finding the “perfect one” without being ready for commitment, it can turn into a problem. Here are six signs that show a person is not ready for a real relationship.

Only happy when with someone

Unless you’re invited for a dinner or you have someone to be with, you’re not happy. The first rule is to learn to be happy alone and only then should a person look for a relationship. Depending on someone else for happiness is the worst decision in life.

Still not over your ex

Are you still in touch with your boyfriend or girlfriend? If seeing them happy makes you angry or jealous, you should first take a break to move on.

Trust issues

You cannot trust anyone. Even if you let someone in your life, you cannot believe what they tell you. This is a red flag to get for a new relationship.

Spending all the time looking for love

Are you spending all your time swiping left or right on dating apps? It might be time to enjoy your hobbies or pursue other interests before getting into the dating zone again.

Holding on to baggage

You need to deal with all the baggage from your previous relationships before you pursue a new. If not, any new relationship will be a rebound.

Emotionally unavailable

If you just got your heart broken, you need to take some time off. Give your heart some time to heal.

Sometimes you need to fly before you can live in a cage again. As Stephen King said: “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure.”
