Becoming an entrepreneur takes courage and dedication. In India, the start-up culture is thriving and how! Not only has the business industry seen tremendous growth, but the number of advanced technology start-ups are also said to have increased by 50 per cent from 2017, according to the latest Nasscom report.

However, beginning a new business is not as glamorous as it is made out to be. Among a few successful feats lie hundreds of untold stories of struggle and failure. From battling depression to going to war with perfectionism and eating disorders, most entrepreneurs find themselves suffering due to mental health disorders.

It’s lonely at the top! Powerful and successful people often have very few close friends. What’s more, striving to change the world around you can leave you fighting with your demons alone. That is where the problem starts. Uncertainty, social isolation and doubts circling around identity only aggravate the issue.

To help deal with the huge responsibility on your shoulders, here are six steps to break out of the cycle of stress and anxiety by Dr Kedar Tilwe, Consultant Psychiatrist, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Health Care.

Prioritise your goals

Make a list of your priorities, objectives, goals and expectations from the new venture.

Learn to self-analyse and accept constructive criticism when offered.

Move ahead

Remember to savour each victory and acknowledge the setbacks but keep moving forward.

Stop procrastinating

Avoid delays and procrastination! Once the decision is made; set up a time table and adhere to it.

Underline self-belief

Keep the faith. Remind yourself about your vision and reasons for starting the business when you first had the idea about it.

Seek help

Reach out to your support system if you feel low or disheartened. It is okay to ask for and accept help when required. Seek professional help if you feel extremely low.

With these few tips in mind, there is no mountain you cannot climb. Always remember: to win the race, you need to be slow and steady.
