We are highly concerned about skin care when summertime arrives. But while slathering SPF all over the body, we should remember to keep our hair happy in the heat of summer. Heat, humidity and sweat can together make the hair super dry, and shampooing every day is no solution. At times, it only aggravates the condition. This is one of the myths we have to break.

“One may have healthy, bouncy hair all year round, but come summer and your hair turns limp and lifeless,” Dr Anup Dhir, Senior Consultant Apollo Hospital says, adding, “It happens because the high humidity content in the atmosphere settles on your hair and weighs it down. During this time your hair may feel dry and lifeless. Sweat and dust during summers does increase hair problems like dandruff, split ends, frizzy texture and increased hair fall.”

Here are some steps to keep your hair nourished in the summer season:

1. Avoid too many cosmetics, use a paraben free shampoo.

2. Avoid chlorinated water for washing and use a rinse out conditioner. If you want to swim, shampoo after swimming.

3. Avoid hair treatments and colours during this season as they cause dryness.

4. Use a cap or scarf in the harsh sun.    

5. You may try sunscreen conditioners and drink lots of fluids.

6. Try egg, mayo and olive oil masks for hair.

7. Apply yoghurt and rinse after 10 minutes for rejuvenation of hair.
