Just like Keto diet, another popular low carb diet fad which is one of the highly searched ones is the Atkins diet. People who follow this particular diet has to include more proteins and fats and avoid foods which are rich in carbs for a period of time. For the unversed, the diet was first promoted by the physician named Dr. Robert C. Atkins. He wrote about it in his best-selling book in 1972.

This diet initially received a lot of flak, but after a lot of studies, many found that this diet showed improvements in blood sugar levels as well as in 'good' HDL cholesterol and also aided in weight loss.

Atkins diet has been divided into 4 phases:

Phase 1 aka Induction:
In phase one, one has to eat around 20 grams of carbs per day for 2 weeks including high-fat, high-protein foods.

Phase 2 aka Balancing:
In this stage, one can add more nuts, low-carb vegetables and fruits back to your diet.

Phase 3 aka Fine-tuning:
As soon as you reach your weight loss goal, you can add more carbs to your diet.

Phase 4 aka Maintenance:
After Phase 3, one can start having healthy carbs by maintaining weight.

Foods to avoid
Sugar, soft drinks, juices, cakes, candies, ice cream, grains rich in carbs such as wheat and rice among others. One has to also avoid trans fat, high carb, and high starches veggies and fruits. You can avoid some of them during the induction phase and continue in later stages.

Foods to eat
As mentioned above, one has to eat food items which are loaded with fats and proteins. So, meats (such as beef, pork, chicken bacon), fatty fish (such as salmon), eggs, low-carb veggies (spinach, broccoli, asparagus and others), full-fat dairy (butter, cheese, cream and yogurt among others), nuts, dark chocolates and seeds.

Bottomline
As mentioned, after induction, one can add healthier carbs such as carb rich vegetables, fruits, potatoes, legumes, and grains such as oats and rice.
